Tribes: Ascend Review - "Fastest" Shooting Game

Tribes: Ascend review and screenshots
The pace of the game means a lot to players like me, who prefer fast-paced action over dull and boring gameplay. Yes, it is a free-to-play game and many critics claim you have to pay to win - but that argument doesn't hold since Tribes: Ascend doesn't let players buy items that you can't earn by playing.. at least not items that affect the game.

When I first heard of the game and looked it up I thought "hey, this is the perfect free Halo alternative" for PC. After downloading and playing the game I quickly found that it was much different, although I would find it hard to believe the creators of Tribes: Ascend weren't inspired by Halo.

Which Free-2-Play FPS Games are more like Pay-2-Win Games?

The problem with most free-to-play games is the fact that many members can simply pay to win, especially in RTS games. However, most free first-person-shooters seem to be fair for the players without cash for upgrades. There was one time when I was spending cash on Warrock every week and when I stopped, I still did just as good. So, upgrades can be nice but they don’t always mean you will win or do better than other players who haven’t paid for them.

But still, there must be some free-2-play FPS games to avoid if you refuse to pay for upgrades and add-ons. Well there are a few games that come to mind and if you do the research I will bet you the reviews agree with me, especially Battlefield Play4Free. They really know how to get their money’s worth, because Battlefield P4F is huge and players dump a lot of money into it. If you can’t pay then don’t play Battlefield Play 4 Free.

Many gamers feel that Combat Arms and Team Fortress 2 are the worst Free-2-Play FPS games ever made, although I don’t think it’s because you can pay-2-win. The truth is that most free fps games are good games, not the best, but good games with decent features. Battlefield Play-4-Free isn’t that bad, but there are many players who pay-2-win and I can’t really say that for any other free-to-play shooter that I’ve played.

Hackers are a larger problem on many of the free first-person-shooters that I’ve played, and I will be posting more detailed game reviews to warn you which games are flooded with hackers. If you want to play a free game where you can get away with hacking then you must be in luck, because I see many people get away with obvious hacks on a regular basis. For instance, gamers that fly through the map and appear to be invincible. There are many players who use map hacks to always know where the enemies are, and this gives them a huge advantage. So while there are many pay-2-win type games out there, most free-to-play fps games face other issues.

Honestly, I hardly play any of them anymore.. Combat Arms sucks now, Warrock sucks now, Battlefield Play-4-Free is a disgrace to all BF games… There must be a few good ones though, and I will find them and post reviews!!

Brick-Force Review | Free Browser FPS Game

Brick-Force is a unique FPS game simply because you can build your own "virtual playgrounds" - brick by brick just like Minecraft. Like Forge mode on Halo, you can play a multiplayer sandbox mode to build the world you play in. With that said, there is a lot more to this game than most free fps games, but still, I don't think it's that great.

Sure, it's a fun game and it has it's pros, but I think there are many better games to play. I'm not particularly a fan of the graphics and overall visuals of this game, but I usually don't like browser-based games to begin with. There is a client version you can download but it's easier to play it in the browser, although it's very nice that they provided us with more than one option.

It's awesome when you create the entire environment that you're playing in, and it's even more awesome to build the environment with your friends on social networking sites. Many players use their smart phones and tablets to play this game, so yes, it is a free, mobile-friendly first-person-shooter.

There are some cool elements you can add to the map, such as bomb sites and turrets. In shooter mode, you can play the classic game modes we all love and enjoy; Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, and Blast Mode.

All in all, it's a great free-to-play game and if you give it a chance I am certain you will find yourself spending hours in sandbox mode building maps. Does it get old quick? No. But there are always the few people who overdue it and burn themselves out. Overall, this is a game you can play for a very long time without getting bored or tired of it. It's fast-paced action when you're playing in a shooter mode, and building your environment in sandbox mode is a great way to challenge your creative skills. Some people say it's more like a "pay-to-win" type of game but I don't think this is always the case and that's not a fair statement. This game incorporated more social engagement than other games and for that, some people will love it even more.

Download Xonotic - Xonotic Reviews, Information and Download Link

Xonotic is a free first-person-shooter based on Nexuiz, and most people will agree with me when I say that Xonotic is the better game. Xonotic is much more polished and provides you with an overall better gaming experience then the original game, Nexuiz.

Basically, the Nexuiz developers ditched the open-source game and moved on to create a game for the PS3. So now we have Xonotic, which is one of the best free fps games of 2013 and a great game to download today if you haven't already played it.

Xonotic reviews are generally positive, mainly 5/5 star ratings as you can see here. Nexuiz had fairly good ratings as well, and most of the fans from that game moved on to Xonotic after the original team moved on to create a closed source game.

It is an addictive arena shooter that you can play on Linux, Windows or Mac OS X. Their mission is to create the best open-source FPS game of its kind, and it's definitely one of the best free games you can play online.

The game is based on the Darkplaces game engine and has higher quality graphics compared to other free fps games, so it's certainly comparable to commercial games. If you like Quake or Unreal Tournament then give Xonotic a try, it's very similar to them.

Xonotic is personally my favorite free arena shooter and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to download a free first-person-shooter game. The gameplay is awesome, very fast-paced so it never gets boring. The graphics are amazing, better than most free games online. The community is great and there are several active forums where you can find other gamers to play with.

Below is the official Xonotic game trailer so you can take a look at the game and get an idea of what it's about and how it looks. The graphics are great and there are other videos on the gameplay if you search YouTube for "Xonotic".

Keep in mind, many of the videos you see on YouTube are from older versions of the game and there has been many improvements since then. The graphics setting can be changed and if you prefer performance over visuals then you might want to keep them lower, but the graphics look amazing when you play with full graphics on.

Download OpenArena | Better Than Quake III Arena?

OpenArena is based on Quake III Arena and so it is often compared to Q3A. Is OpenArena better than Quake III Arena? Most reviews on OpenArena claim that the game is in fact better, although most agree that the graphics are horrible. I haven't played much Quake III Arena so it's hard for me to give an honest opinion, but I do think OpenArena is a great game.

There are many free games with outstanding graphics and OpenArena is not one of them. But still, OpenArena is a fantastic game and extremely fun to play. The poor graphics honestly don't ruin this game, at least not for me, and I'm usually picky on the games I play (I have a preference for games with high quality graphics). This game is fun though, very fast-paced and straight to the point shoot em' up fun. Free For All and Deathmatch are what make the game appealing to me, and if you prefer these games as well then you will probably like OpenArena.

There are quite a few game modes to choose from, such as Free For All, Domination, Capture The Flag, Harvester, Overload and couple more. You can play with bots as well, the game will refer to them as simulated players and they can make death-matches more balanced if you lack an even amount of players. Plus, the simulated players are easier to kill and make the game more exciting if you want to go on a killing spree.

Below this post is a video review on OpenArena that will display the gameplay, graphics and everything so you can get a good idea of the game's features. Check it out and if you think it looks like a good game click the download link below. Here are the system requirements, it will run smoothly on most computers, even slower or older computers.

System Requirements:
  • Pentium II 233MHz / AMD K6-2 300MHz or equally powerful processor
  • 64MB of system memory
  • OpenGL supported video card with 16MB of video memory. (Voodoo Banshee, TNT and up)
  • 400MB of hard drive space
